There could be hundreds of way to make a sundial from the scrap. All those methods may require some tools or materials to collect which could not be handy for everyone. What about making a sundial form a object that is available in most of houses.Lets make thing simplified, making a sundial just form a flower pot.
Making a sundial from a flower tub is a fun for the kids and educational in a way top learn the earth circular rotation around the sun. They could easily made this sundial from simple astrological experiment in the meanwhile inventing most ancient piece of time telling device.
Things to do before you start
Find out a flower pot in your home garden. Wash this by taking away any plant or soil inside it. If it is a hassle for you, buy a new one from the market. Manage a straight long dowel or pen that will work like a gnomon up above the pot. You also need a marker pen, white paper and tap.
Steps
1. Go out side ; find a sunny spot in your garden or yard. Place the white paper on the ground and put the pot on the paper upside down.
2. Make a hole at the center bottom of flower pot and stick the dowel or straight pen inside it. Make the dowel permanent by gluing it though the hole. This will make the dowel permanent on the tub and remember it need to stand as straight as possible.
3. Now check you wrist watch and exactly each hour notice the shadow of dowel casted on white paper. Use a marker pen to draw a line corresponding to each shadow in every hours of a day.
4. If you start this process in the morning near the evening you will end up with around 8 to 10 line drawn on the paper indicating hours of the day; e.g. 9 hrs, 10 hrs, 11 hrs etc.
When you finish it, you will see the lines you draw on the paper follows a clockwise direction. This is because if you live in the northern hemisphere, any shadow casted by sun will move clockwise. Shadow will also change it places as the earth is not stable relative to sun; it is spinning on its axis continually.

5 Easy Steps to Make A Sundial

Have you ever asked yourself how people measure time when there was no clock or wrist watch. There was no mechanical or digital technology advancement thousands of years ago but people use their imagination to measure time. They invented a time telling device that counts the hours and minutes of a day by using the shadow of the sun. As Albert Einstein said once, "imagination is powerful than knowledge”.
If you stand beside a sundial, you will feel like standing thousands of years back in history.It is spectacular to watch on a sundial and investigate it`s power of measuring hours and minutes of a day. But,the problem is where you will find a sundial. May be you can make one of your own. Sounds difficult! Absolutely not. If you follow the instruction given below, it will not take more time for you to make a sundial yourself.
Making a sundial could be a great fun as it does not require any technical knowledge at all.All you need to do is manage some materials and follow the steps describes here. You can do it yourself or with your children or with the kids if you are a school teacher in profession.
Before you begin
You need to accumulate some materials before start doing what I am suggesting here to do. Don`t worry, all these materials does not cost you much money or if you are lucky; you may already posses these materials right in your home.First of all, you need to manage a cardboard to make the dial where you will curve or draw the hour lines. A sharpe anti-cutter and a marker pen is needed. You also need glue,scissors and a computer with printer to begin the process.
Instructions
Step 1: Find out the latitude of your location on earth. Sounds difficult? Just go to this website and zoom the google map until you find your location and get the latitude reading. You need this information to calibrate your sundial to the due north.
Step 2: Cut the card-board in more or like rectangular shape. You can cut big rectangle but remember not to make it too big or small. Because you are going to draw the hour lines on it.
Step 3: Brows the BBC Norfolk Kids website to ge the illustration of the sundial base. Just print the drawing for further use. Also, print the gnomon illustration from that website.
Step 4: Put the printed paper on the cardboard you have just shaped by cutting. Draw the hour marks on the rectangular cardboard with your marker pen. Cut the gnomon by putting the printed illustration on a hard drawing paper.
Step 5. Cut the card-board on the specific space as stated on the printed illustration. Put the gnomon through the hole and for firmness you can use glue. You can just paste the paper you have just printed on the cardboard and skip the step 4.
Now you are ready to go outside to place the sundial towards true north. Enjoy the sundial that you make your own.

Make your own armillary sundial
Most of the armillary sundial available in the market are made of metal like copper and brass. Metal circles aorund the genom represents most important areas of the sky. Greek philosopher Anaximander of Miletus (611-547 BC) or astronomer Hipparchus or (190-120 BC)invented this armillary sundial.
However, they are beautiful and complex. If you can not find in your area or are too expensive to buy, you can always create your own. It is difficult, but the tools and techniques that you may be able to pull it off easily.
You need cardboard, scissors, painter, long toothpick, disk cd with case and a tape that is wider than 25 mm.
Make hour circles on paper or print it from a cloack image.Make black lines by cut with scissors, and place it on your head and keep the tape on them. Use a long strip of tape and let it hang from the bottom. Roman numerals in the center to an hour a circle along the edge CD insert.
Using colored paper, cut two circles, each 3 cm.Tape on both sides clearly and insert the toothpick right through the middle of CD case.
Take the case of gem and hinged opening on the left. Now, take the sundial and the location of the assembly line in a window with an hour circle on the opposite side of the hinge. Now slope on the left side of the case so that your coverage is based on the assembly line.

Sundial: An object of curiosity for your children
We know that the Earth rotates on its axis at a constant speed, so that in the last 24 hours, the sun has moved around the Earth. Make a sundial, to use this information to determine the time.
Spend the day by seeing your created sundial with your children and observe how the big Earth rotates on its axis on your little sundial. To get your first idea of preparation spot a flashlight on a replica globe. Turn the globe so that everyone can see how the sun shines in different parts of the Earth at different times. Slowly turn the world and show your children how the sun rises over the continent, its noon, the sun sets on the continent, while rise on the next continent.
Preparation
Give each child a plate of paper or plastic and a piece of clay. Teach them to a round disk with it on the plate.
Each child will cut on it a triangle of cardboard that is relatively stable. They are working hard to built this clay triangles. They also need to make a touch point with the smallest angle and the center of the disc. Right angle in the sand, but not all the way to the edge.
Marking of sundial
Now the fun begins when you began this on a sunny and dry day. Tell the child to place their sundial in a sunny place.Each hour will go to class and do the deep lines in the clay, where the shadow falls. It all started with a paper clip for each child per day if the attack side of the line.
Using a timer or alarm to alert you every time you walked past the hour. In addition, it is easier to mark each hour from 1 to 12.
Follow Up
You need couple of days to fulfill the project.Each day leave the project around 3pm.
Leave to stay sundial after then.From the next day, you need to watch the every hour that the sundial and how precisely it gives the reading.
Sundials are used depending on the type of clay can be baked, glaze, or dry. Each time you visit the sundial with your children, ask them to say the time by reading it. Ask them questions what happened if you move it in different place of your garden etc..
